Flashback Mondays – Dragon Ball Z
Do you remember the first anime you ever watched, and how it made you feel? I do! In fact, I remember where I was, how old I was, what episode I watched and the person who introduced me to it. It was way back in the late 90’s when Toonanmi still had it’s afternoon block. Yes, the good old days, right? The episode in question was episode 18 (“Last Stop on the Serpentine Road! Are You Kaio-sama?” / “The End of Snake Way” [The End of Snake Way]). Seeing Gohan transform into that giant ape while under the training of Piccolo was that holly shit moment, this is freaking awesome!
From that point forward I was hooked on the awesomeness that is Dragon Ball Z and I knew right then that it would follow me through life. My love for DBZ goes way beyond just being one of my favorite shows. It gave me countless memories that I still think about this day. From being introduced to the series by one of my long time friends to building a bond with my brothers, the Dragon Ball universe can never be replaced.
One of my favorite memories I had watching the show was with my brother Nick. After rerun after rerun we were getting tired of watching the same episodes over and over again. For those too young to remember it use to take months to get the liscenses, and then finally dub the anime, so all we could do was wait. Of course we knew about the infamous Super Sayian transformation and expected that it was only a mater of time before we finally witnessed it for ourself. When it finally happened we couldn’t had been more happier. I remember hearing “Next Time On Dragon Ball Z” and seeing the much anticipated transformation. We were so excited that we jump up and down in joy and I actually stubbed my toe in all the craziness.
It’s memories like that one that keeps Dragon Ball in my heart. That being said, no mater how good new animes get or how much I like them, I will never feel the same way for them as I do for DBZ. What was your first anime and how did it make you feel?
