Physical VS. Digital Media
With the advances in hard drive capacity and the increase popularity of digital media is it still necessary for consumers to still buy physical media? I know many individuals have made the agreement of physical VS. digital medial before, but it’s an important topic to me.
Personally, I love the tangibility of having a physical video game, Blu-Ray, and music collection. To me nothing can match that feeling of scrolling your finger through your collection, and physically picking it up. Call me old fashion, but a physical collection feels more organic and more fulfilling to own. Even more so, a digital collection doesn’t feel like you truly own it. On top of that you can’t resell your digital items, so If you don’t like what you bought you’re out of luck.
Just like I said earlier digital media is very intangible, and there will always be an uncertainty of whether or not your collection will be there down the road. You never know if the company who sold your those digital products to you will be in business in the future, or if they’re able to keep the licenses of said products. So if they lose a license to a particular digital product you would never be able to redownload it again. That has happened to me before with iTunes before, so since that experience I only buy CDs and vinyls to satisfy my music needs.
At least with a physical media collection you can take good care of your collection, and for decades in the future and maybe even pass your collection down to a family member. You can’t pass down a digital collection. Furthermore, digital releases don’t offer you cool collector’s edition that helps your collection stand out, and it’s fun to learn that some items in collection have gone out of print. Having an out of print movie feels a little special because others can’t find that product anymore, and even more so when that product becomes rare and hard to find as the years go on. Collector’s editions and out of print media makes collecting physical media more fun; It doesn’t matter whether it’s a video game, blu-ray or some other type of physical release. All that matter’s is that you like it.
