In recent years there has been a revolution in the television space. Not only do we have better shows than we ever had before, but there’s an incredible large number of platforms for said shows to be broadcasted on. This is mainly thanks to the increased availability of broadband connections, and the streaming services that would follow. When it comes down to the new Golden Age; it was Netflix that sparked this new revolution. It shouldn’t be a surprise that original content is fueling this new age of television. Even ten years ago it was unthinkable to launch a television show outside of a cable station, but with the help of faster internet speeds Netflix has proved that it could be done successfully.
However, Netflix was not the only player who made this new age possible. In fact, the increase in streaming services in general had a helping hand in this new Golden Age. Companies like Amazon and Sony are adding fuel to the fire too. Amazon has their Pilot Season and original shows are big factors as well. Furthermore, Sony now has a partial la crate live television service called PlayStation Vue. They offer three packages with highly sought after channels in each package, and a cloud DVR at no additional cost. To sweeten the deal you don’t have a contract or a monthly fee for a box, plus you can stream your DVR’ed shows anytime. Actually, we should be calling this new age in television the “Streaming Age”. TV lovers can now stream their favorite shows without leaving their homes, so it’s clear that convenience is another huge factor.
On top of that these steaming services made it possible for more people than ever before to cut the cord. Hulu for example has quite a large number of major network shows on their service the next day, so many individuals are starting to see less value in a cable subscription. Even HBO has seen where the television market is going. They recently launched their own streaming service called HBO Now, and the great thing about it is that you can still enjoy HBO all the premium network as to offer. Shows like Game of Thrones can be streamed at the same time when it airs on traditional cable. The bottom line is that the Streaming Age wouldn’t be possible without great shows like Game of Thrones, Daredevil, House of Cards and similarly popular streamed shows.
